Description: |

Zhongshan Road is the main street of Songjiang Town, running the
whole length of the town from east to west. Most of the town's
many historic sights are located along this road, making an
itinerary quite easy to follow. Starting at the east end, the
Square Pagoda Park with its pagoda dating from the Northern Song
Dynasty is located at 235 Zhongshan Road East. Next to the
park's main entrance gate is the Songjiang District Museum at
233 Zhongshan Road East. Heading west, a short distance up the
street is a Tang Dynasty Buddhist stone tower, hidden inside the
compound of an elementary school at Lane 43 Zhongshan Road East.
The central part of Zhongshan Road between Renmin Road North and
Xilin Road North was reconstructed as Huating Old Street in 2003
and two new stone pailou memorial archways were built at either
end of this section of the street. The Taoist East Peak Temple
was rebuilt in 2003 on the same site where it was originally
built 400 years ago at No.9 on Lane 196 of Zhongshan Road
Middle, a block from its intersection with Renmin Road. At the
east end of Huating Old Street, near its intersection with
Renmin Road South, is the walled compound of the Songjiang
Ancient Mosque dating from the Yuan Dynasty. At the west end of
Huating Old Street, near its intersection with Xilin Road North,
is the West Grove Buddhist Temple and its 40-meter-high,
seven-story pagoda dating from the Southern Song Dynasty. If
you're looking for a more authentic historic neighborhood, the
western end of Zhongshan Road in between Xilin Road North and
Yushu Road had yet to be redeveloped as of May 2009, and was
still lined with old two-story wooden houses. However, the old
neighborhood west of Yushu Road that used to stand along the far
western end of Zhongshan Road had been completely demolished by
2009. The real treasures of the road's western end are two
ancient stone arched foot bridges crossing a canal. The larger
of the two bridges if the five-arched Da Chang Qiao standing on
the east side of Yushu Road. West of Yushu Road is a smaller
three-arched stone foot bridge which now stands in a desolate no
man's land snce the demolition of the surrounding old
neighborhood |
