Located on Mao Island (Sun island) in Mao River of Qingpu
County, Shanghai, Maota Lighthouse was the second oldest
lighthouse in China, which was built in 874 A.D. under Qianfu
Reign of Tang Dynasty, with a history of 1128 years. A thousand
years ago, Mao River was the approach into sea, and the light on
top of Maota Lighthouse would be kindled to mark the channel for
vessels during nighttime. In 1279, at the end of the Song
Dynasty, with the coastline of Shanghai receded, the functions
of Maota Lighthouse became weakened, and the light was finally
extinguished. In 2002, the Lighthouse was kindled once again
after 700 years of silence. |

pass through Zhujiajiao). From the Zhujiajiao bus station 朱家角汽车站
take Zhujiajiao Line 3 朱家角3路 until the Sun Island resort / Mao
Ta (terminal). |
