Description: |
|
Located on East Grand Street in Jiading and occupying an area of
3 hectares, it is one of the five major classical gardens and
the oldest one in Shanghai. It was built in the 15th Hongzhi
year of the Ming Dynasty (1502), 490 years from now. It was
amalgamated from the Gongshi Garden, the Shengshi Garden, the
Jinshi Garden and the City God Temple. It is a cultural relic
protected by the municipality. In the center of the garden is a
pond surround by rockeries and the scenery is partitioned into 4
scenic areas of the Peach Blossom Pool, the Cloud Condensing
Pavilion, the Clear Mirror Pond and the Town Temple. There are
pavilions, terraces, chambers and halls, beautiful opionds and
winding paths, luxuriant trees and bamboos, low balustrades and
stone bridges, broken slopes and dripping fountains, rockeries
and caves, all ingeniously arranged, forming a garden within a
garden, a scene outside a scene, with hills like peaks with deep
valleys, streams with tranquil beauty, a broad vista in a small
garden. Therefore, it is reputed as mountains and forests in a
city and a masterpiece of gardening of the Ming Dynasty. In the
hall of the City God Temple in the Town Temple area there is an
exhibition center of Shanghai Folk culture, A True Picture of
Shanghai Folk Customs and Habits, which shows the Shanghai's
Folk customs in the past hundred years. |
