ShouˇŻan Temple is located in the south of JinˇŻao Hill, 2.5
kilometers to the east of Chongming downtown, with an area of
nearly 7 mu. The Temple is a famous ancient temple built in
Chunyou period of Song Dynasty, with a history of more than 700
years. It includes Tianwang Hall, Mahavira Hall, Sansheng Hall,
Confession House, Fengle Pavilion, Canghai Attic, which is also
a county-level cultural relic protection unit. Two luxuriant
maidenhair trees in the yard (planted in Qing Dynasty), with a
diameter of more than 1 feet, has been protected as a city-level
ancient tree. In 1989, Zhao Puchu, Chairman of the Buddhist
Association of China, visited the temple and wrote the
inscription: Buddha lives for all eternity; the pure land will
be safe for ever. The
Mahavira Hall of ShouˇŻan Temple is as tall as 22 meters, the
highest one in Shanghai. A reclined Buddha that has a weight of
13 tons and a length of 6 meters is placed in the west wing-room
(also the highest jade Buddha in Shanghai). Everyday in the
temple, bells and drums are sound from morning to night; wooden
fishes are knocked, and Buddhist scriptures are chanted. The
number of pilgrims comes up to thousands in Buddhist festivals.
In recent years, the Temple has received a lot of pilgrims from
the United Sates, Japan, Singapore, Germany, France and other
countries, as well as tourists from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau,
or compatriots who come to redeem a vow to gods after meeting
with their families on the island.
Jade Buddha Tower was built in 2000, and occupies an area
of nearly 900 square meters. Located on the peak, the tower is
on a grand scale and great magnificence. A giant jade Buddha
that has a weight of 15 tons, a height of 3.7 meters and a width
of 2.2 meters is placed in the tower (the biggest one in the
East China). The Buddha sits up on a lotus pedestal, doing
meditation with ring-shaped hands and piercing eyes. Two
hundreds and fifty small jade Buddhas are placed on both side of
the giant jade Buddha, with all the vivid looks and gestures. |
