Description: |

Chongming County is a region of the Shanghai Municipality
consisting of three islands; from largest to smallest: Chongming
Island, Changxing Island and Hengsha Island. Chongming is the
least urban area of Shanghai Municipality, the only
administrative division classed as a county rather than a
district (explanation of terms), though with a population of
about 700,000 it is far from entirely rural. There are
development projects going on; Chongming was used as a
resettlement area for people displaced by the Three gorges dam
project, and a mostly new "eco-city" called Dongtan is being
built at the South end of the island. |
